Write like you need it to survive

The work of our hands is fascinating. I like how our energy, experience, knowledge, and imagination translate to creating beautiful things through sketching, sculpting, playing musical instruments, operating different tools and apparatuses, and mixing ingredients to cook or bake delights to reward our senses.

But to me, nothing beats writing. Nothing beats knowing how connected the heart and mind are when writing and telling a story.

I want to write for many mediums and purposes. Writing allows me to embrace curiosity and find beauty in the complexities of life and people. It compels me to seek out the truths and nuances in the world around us.

Let me share with you how it goes.

It starts within you. It’s not just about laying words on paper. The stories you tell, your ideas, and your messages matter.

When you write, you have both the privilege and the responsibility of touching people’s lives and influencing their thoughts, affecting how they decide and choose to live.

Some days are tough. There’s doubt, ignorance, fear of rejection, and failure. Many things make it difficult, but what is life without struggle?

The chaos in your mind, the fear in your heart, and the struggle deep within your soul are natural conditions of life – and of being creative. You are flawed, and you are human. We all are.

Sometimes life disappoints us because it’s imperfect and our circumstances are not ideal. But that’s also because we hope for the good in everything.

We look for the extremes. We want to qualify people, things, and situations as either good or bad. We sometimes find it hard to believe they can be both. It’s difficult to reconcile with that fact, especially when all we see in the mainstream media are tired tropes and clichés.

So look for the real in people. Learn about their wounds, scars, doubts, and the lines that wrinkle their faces when they smile. Listen to the crack in their voices when they’re about to cry and the joyful thunder in their laughter. Observe the world around you without trying to fix anything first. That’s reality.

Then, after you’ve gained some insight, act, take part, and do something that will either help people escape or understand the situation a little better.

Your heart, mind, soul, how you interpret the knowledge you gain, and your life experiences are the sources of your art. You are a masterpiece all on your own.

There is room for your stories and expressions in this world. So, write.
